Many believe this is the greatest role-playing game of all time and one of the best games, period. The game's legacy lives on proudly with Age of Empires IV, which I also greatly enjoyed. I will always remember the thrill of trebuchets firing on a wall, even if it was my own getting wrecked. I loved the attention to detail on units and sounds, with civilizations even speaking in their native languages. The variation in civilizations was amazing. There were so many layers to the gameplay and so many options in how I could conquer my enemies. Once I got to roughly 60 games (top 3%), it became very hard to eliminate titles. I started with my top 100 games (top 5%) and whittled the list down. As nominees for consideration, I have played nearly 2,300 games in my life. Ebert’s unique thinking into my revised ranking. His reasoning was that determining if a work deserved a spot on that Greatest list was what really mattered and arguing further ordinal position probably didn’t mean very much. However, he said he did not like this approach, preferring to provide a list of Greatest Movies that were unranked. The late, great Roger Ebert once provided a top ten list of his favorite movies. Here is that updated ranking, in the form of an 8,000 word article, along with a refresher of my criteria and thought process.
